Germany summoned Iran’s ambassador on Monday, four days after a court sentenced two men for plotting to assassinate Josef Schuster, President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany..

The German Foreign Ministry announced the diplomatic summons on X, identifying Volker Beck, Chairman of the German-Israeli Society, as another target.

“We do not tolerate attacks on Jewish life or on those who defend it, not anywhere, and certainly not in Germany,” the ministry wrote. “The malicious attempted attacks against Josef Schuster and Volker Beck will have legal consequences.”

The court said one of the two men had been steered by Iran’s intelligence service.

Ali S., a Danish national, received eight years and six months in prison for preparing an assassination and aggravated arson. Judges said he was tasked in early 2025 with gathering information on Schuster and Beck and spying on two Jewish grocers in Berlin.

Tawab M., an Afghan national, received four years and six months for his involvement. German federal prosecutors charged both men in May.

The ministry also reiterated its previous calls to add Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the “masterminds behind Iranian assassination attempts worldwide” to the European Union’s terrorist list.

“We will not allow Iran to threaten our free society,” it said.
