A gunman opened fire on Monday morning in Côte-des-Neiges, the heart of Montreal’s Jewish community.
At least one police officer was wounded. Jewish schools and synagogues locked down as a city-wide emergency alert went out.
The shooting began around 11:30 a.m. near Decarie Boulevard and Westbury Avenue. Montreal police spokesperson Jean-Pierre Brabant told the public, “We are asking everyone to avoid the sector. The situation is not under control.”
Residents near De Courtrai and Trans Island Avenues received emergency alerts ordering them to shelter indoors, lock their doors, and stay away from windows.
The neighborhood is one of Canada’s largest centers of Jewish life. Beth Rivkah Academy, Chabad NDG, the Vaad Ha’ir, MADA, the Chai Center, Yagdil Torah, and several kosher businesses all operate within blocks of the shooting.
Eyewitnesses reported more than 20 shots fired. Police established a perimeter, closed surrounding roads, and deployed a heavy presence across the district. Jewish schools and institutions across the area entered lockdown.
Rabbi Chaim Shlomo Cohen, a Chabad emissary in Montreal, told Ynet that gunfire struck a building adjacent to the local Chabad House. Around 100 people, including volunteers and evacuees from nearby hotels, took shelter inside after the shooting.
