Two people, a Jewish man and a police officer, were killed after a gunman opened fire on Monday morning on a busy street in Côte-des-Neiges, the heart of Montreal’s Jewish community.

The victims were identified as: 68-year-old Rabbi Michael Moshe Mizrahi; and 34-year-old Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, a member of the Service de Police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM).

Jewish schools, synagogues, and community institutions across the area entered lockdown under a city-wide emergency alert immediately following the shooting.

The incident began around 11:30 a.m. near Decarie Boulevard and Westbury Avenue. Montreal police spokesperson Jean-Pierre Brabant initially told the public, “We are asking everyone to avoid the sector. The situation is not under control.”

Authorities later confirmed that one police officer was killed and another wounded. The attacker was shot dead at the scene.

Côte-des-Neiges is one of Canada’s largest centers of Jewish life. Beth Rivkah Academy, Chabad NDG, the Vaad Ha’ir, MADA, the Chai Center, Yagdil Torah, and several kosher businesses all operate within blocks of the shooting.

Eyewitnesses reported more than 20 shots fired. Police established a perimeter, closed surrounding roads, and deployed a heavy presence across the neighborhood.

Montreal Police Chief Fady Dagher said there was no information indicating that additional suspects had been involved.

Authorities were continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack. Media reports linked the shooter to a violent “incel” manifesto targeting women.
