A Norwegian professor who called the October 7th massacre “the most beautiful thing that has happened in our century” will not face criminal charges, after police dismissed a complaint against him on Thursday.
The complaint had been filed with police after Bassam Hussein, a project management professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, made the remark during an April 21 lecture hosted by the Socialist Forum.
StoppNRK, a group combating antisemitism, was behind the complaint.
Investigator Arild Hansen and Prosecutor Sunniva Tronvoll told StoppNRK they had closed the case because “the reported conduct is not considered a criminal offense.”
Hussein’s remark also drew a response from NTNU. Vikas Thakur, dean of the university’s Faculty of Engineering, said Hussein “spoke as an individual citizen with a background from Gaza, not on behalf of the university.”
StoppNRK plans to appeal the decision within the three-week deadline. On Elpeleg, head of StoppNRK, said, “It is becoming increasingly unsafe to be a Jew — or anyone who opposes terrorism — in Norway.”
