Coinciding with next week’s third anniversary of the October 7th massacre, the Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) chapter at the University of California-Berkeley is promoting speaking appearances of a former Columbia University visiting professor who has expressed open support for terrorist groups.
Dr. Mohamed Abdou will visit UC-Berkeley on Oct. 6 and The Claremont Colleges on Oct. 7 as part of his “Death to the Akademy” tour.
The events are being held under the banner of “Al Aqsa Flood Anniversary Talks,” a reference to Hamas’s name for the October 7th attacks in which it brutally murdered nearly 1,200 people in southern Israel and kidnapped more than 250 others.
Shortly after the October 7th atrocities, Abdou, a self-described anarchist who was born in Egypt and raised in Canada, stated on social media, “I’m with Hamas, Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad.”
Abdou’s upcoming talks were highlighted in an Instagram post published by UC-Berkeley SJP on Monday. Collaborators on the post included Abdou himself, as well as the People’s Fund and Yaffa’s Utopia accounts.
The post includes an inverted red triangle, a marking used by Hamas to designate Israeli targets that has emerged as a common antisemitic symbol globally in the October 7th aftermath, as well as drawings of armed Palestinian terrorists.
Abdou’s UC-Berkeley talk, the materials say, will focus on the “urgent battle against crusading Euro-Amerikan settler colonialism”
At The Claremont Colleges, Abdou will “dive into organizing lessons from Gaza’s mujahideen,” an Arabic term for Muslims who engage in jihad and one often used by Islamist terrorist groups to describe their members.
When students are invited to commemorate Hamas’s “Al Aqsa Flood” and learn “organizing lessons from Gaza’s mujahideen,” there should be no confusion about the intent of the speaker or what is being normalized on American college campuses.
The discussions will not be about legitimate criticism of Israel or peaceful advocacy for the Palestinians. Instead, they will feature open support for and glorification of Hamas, a State Department-designated terrorist organization that has killed thousands of Israelis and dozens of Americans over the past three decades, including 46 U.S citizens on October 7th.
UC-Berkeley and The Claremont Colleges have to address this matter urgently. American institutions of higher education must not offer platforms for the celebration of terrorist violence and the deadliest slaughter of Jews since the Holocaust.
UC Berkeley SJP is promoting an event that openly glorifies Hamas and terrorist violence on American campuses.
