Demonstrators in the Swedish capital of Stockholm altered a mock Auschwitz gate on Saturday, replacing “Arbeit Macht Frei” with “Gaza.”
The group “Palestina Demonstration Stockholm” organized the rally to demand the release of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, whom Israel has detained since September 2024 and identifies as a Hamas colonel.

The demonstration also called for the release of convicted terrorist and former Al-Aqsa Martyrsβ Brigades leader Marwan Barghouti, who is serving multiple life sentences in Israel, and demanded greater protection for healthcare workers in Gaza.
Demonstrators staged a performance showing a blood-covered Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu persecuting Gazan mothers and infants beneath the gate, then waving a wad of cash. Posters read, “Doctors are not targets; stop killing our doctors.”
Sweden has adopted the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) Working Definition of Antisemitism, under which Holocaust trivialization constitutes a clear example of antisemitism. Staging Gaza’s suffering beneath an Auschwitz replica meets that definition directly.
“To trivialize the Holocaust in the way that occurred at yesterday’s demonstration in Stockholm is incredibly distasteful and abhorrent,” said lawyer Aaron Verstandig, chair of the Official Council of Swedish Jewish Communities.
Swedish Jewish academic Dr. Daniel Schatz described a rally led by “a person dressed as Netanyahu with a bloody head, an Israeli flag, and a depiction that brings to mind Nazi symbolism.”
“Particularly noteworthy is that this is happening openly on Swedish streets, in full view of the police, without any visible objections,” Schatz said. “How long will these insanities be normalized before the responsible authorities and politicians pull the emergency brake?”
