The British government on Thursday announced it was advancing new counter-terrorism measures after two Jewish men were stabbed in London’s Golders Green on Wednesday in an antisemitic terrorist attack.
In recent weeks, multiple arson attacks have targeted Jewish sites in London. In October, a ramming and stabbing attack left two people dead at a Manchester synagogue on Yom Kippur.
UK Security Minister Dan Jarvis said the government was moving forward with legislation under the National Security Act. The changes would allow authorities to prosecute individuals acting as proxies for hostile foreign states, treating them in the same way as foreign intelligence agents.
British security officials have warned that Iran has sought to use criminal proxies to carry out hostile activity on UK soil. Police are investigating a recent synagogue arson attack in London after a pro-Iranian group claimed responsibility. Authorities are examining possible links.
Britain’s independent reviewer of terrorism legislation, Jonathan Hall, said the scale of recent incidents now constituted “the biggest national security emergency” since 2017, when the country faced a wave of major terror attacks.
The government also announced an additional £25 million to strengthen security for Jewish institutions, bringing total funding for the community this year to £58 million. The announcement follows a steady stream of attacks, underscoring the urgency of a more decisive response.
