‘Miracle at Zakynthos’: Join a Conversation With Author Deno Seder on How an Island Community Banded Together to Save Its Jews From the Nazis
Join an engaging conversation with Deno Seder, author of Miracle at Zakynthos, on Tuesday, February 22nd, at 12 PM EST, to learn how the population of the Greek island of Zakynthos, led Mayor Loukas Karrer and Metropolitan Dimitrios Chrysostomos, banded together to save all 275 of their Jewish neighbors during the Holocaust.
With the events of World War II becoming more distant and the number of Holocaust dwindling by the year, the need to teach future generations about the horrors of the Nazi genocide is more urgent than ever, particularly with resurgent antisemitism threatening Jewish communities around the world.
The real-life events detailed in Miracle at Zakynthos remind us that civic and religious leaders have the power to stand up and confront antisemitism and other forms of hatred and help forge a better future for all humanity.
By interviewing locals who remembered the events of World War II on the island of Zakynthos and researching testimonies and diaries, Seder was able to document the brave actions of community members who sheltered Jews from the Nazis.
