Urge Indiana Senate to Amend HB 1002 and Reinstate IHRA Antisemitism Definition
This week, the Indiana Senate Education Committee passed HB 1002 out of committee after amending the legislation to remove any reference to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) Working Definition of Antisemitism. This renders the legislation ineffective and not protective of the Jewish community.
Should the amended bill become law, Indiana would be an outlier among all 35 states, the U.S. Department of State, 45 countries, and more than 1,200 institutions around the world that have endorsed the definition.
There is still time for the Senate to do the right thing and amend HB 1002 to include a reference to IHRA.
Take Action!
If you are an Indiana resident, call and email your State Senator TODAY and demand that they uphold their responsibility to protect Hoosier Jewish students by adding IHRA back into the bill in an amendment to HB 1002. (Sample language is below, but we highly encourage you to personalize your message.)

Dear Senator [Last Name],
I am a member of the Hoosier community, writing to you concerning the fight against antisemitism. I urge you to amend HB 1002 and reinstate the definition of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA).
The Indiana Jewish community strongly endorses including the reference to the IHRA Working Definition of Antisemitism in HB 1002. This was removed from the version amended in the Senate Education Committee. The IHRA working definition is considered the gold standard and has been adopted by 35 states, the U.S. Department of Education, 45 countries, and over 1,200 institutions around the world. It has also been supported by over 50 organizations around the state of Indiana. Should the amended version pass, Indiana would be an outlier, and institutions of education would not have the guidance they need to better identify antisemitism.
I ask you to uphold your responsibility to protect Jewish students by amending IHRA back into HB 1002.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
Sincerely,
[Your Name]
