The European Parliament approved a resolution on Thursday calling for a coordinated European Union strategy to “counter Islamist entryism and the influence of the Muslim Brotherhood.”

The measure, passed by a 381-167 margin, is part of an initiative spearheaded by French MEP CĂ©line Imart (European People’s Party) to bolster scrutiny of European public funding and financial networks potentially linked to extremist organizations; improve cooperation and intelligence sharing between EU member states; examine whether individuals or entities linked to the Muslim Brotherhood meet the legal criteria for inclusion on the EU terrorist list; and protect European democratic institutions from extremist influence while safeguarding fundamental freedoms.

A similar resolution was passed by the French National Assembly in January.

Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) Executive Director of European Affairs Shannon Seban welcomed Thursday’s news, stating, “For too long, Europe has underestimated the dangers of Islamist entryism and the influence of networks seeking to exploit our democratic institutions from within. Today’s vote is an important political step, but it must not become another resolution without consequences. The European Commission and member states must now translate this commitment into concrete action, particularly on transparency, financing, and accountability.”

“Defending our democracies means having the courage to identify the threats they face and the determination to confront them,” Seban emphasized.

CAM is partnering with MEP Imart on an upcoming event at the European Parliament that will highlight the need to address and counter the Muslim Brotherhood’s growing presence across the continent.
