The Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) was the 35 organizations to sign a joint letter applauding Meta’s recent policy change regarding the term “Zionist” when used as a proxy for “Jews” with dehumanizing comparisons, calls for harm, or denials of existence, and urging other social media platforms to follow Meta’s lead in fighting antisemitism worldwide.
The full text of the letter can be read HERE and below:
We, the undersigned organizations and individuals from different backgrounds, countries, religions and political affiliations, applaud and appreciate Meta’s decision to remove hateful posts using the word “Zionists” as a euphemism for “Jews.”
Over 95% of the world’s Jews identify as Zionists who support the Jewish right to self-determination in a national home — The State of Israel.
Antisemites increasingly use the term “Zionists” as a convenient stand-in for “Jews” to promote hate online, while they falsely claim that they are merely addressing a political issue.
Meta’s decision will help to address this “antisemitism loophole” and help protect Jews as a minority community across its platforms.
We urge YouTube, TikTok, X, LinkedIn, Snapchat, Telegram, Reddit, and other social media platforms to follow Meta’s lead by similarly identifying and fighting both classic and new forms of antisemitism. Jewish users, like every other minority, deserve to be safe when using social media.
