Antisemitic Hate Crimes in New York City Rise by Nearly 50 Percent, NYPD Data Shows

Antisemitic hate crimes in New York have risen by nearly 50% in the past year, new data released last week by the city’s police department shows.

There were 121 reported hate crimes targeting Jews in New York City in 2020, while in 2021 there have been 179 so far, an increase of 58 incidents (a 48% jump).

In both years, Jews have been the most-targeted group in hate crimes, according to the New York City Police Department (NYPD).

However, the largest percentage increase in 2021 has been a 361% rise (from 28 incidents to 129) of crimes against Asians.

Two weeks ago, a Hanukkah menorah erected on a traffic island in the Hollis Hills neighborhood of Queens was damaged when it was knocked into the road, part of a broader worldwide trend of antisemitic incidents linked to the Jewish “Festival of Lights.”

The NYPD is also searching for suspects in a recent string of physical assaults against Jewish children on the streets of the South Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn.
