Irish Bill to Ban Imports From Israeli ‘Settlements’ Passed by Lowed House of Parliament

Ireland’s Dáil, the country’s lower house of parliament, passed legislation on Tuesday to ban imports of goods from Israeli “settlements” in the “Occupied Palestinian Territory.”

If enacted, the law would make Ireland the first European Union member state to enact such a ban through legislation.

The Israeli Settlements (Prohibition of Importation of Goods) Bill cleared its Final Stage without a recorded division.

The Irish government said the law fulfills an “international legal obligation.” It cited a non-binding International Court of Justice advisory opinion issued July 19, 2024, which said countries should take steps to prevent trade relations that help maintain what the court described as the “illegal situation” in the “Occupied Palestinian Territory.”

The bill now moves to the Seanad, Ireland’s upper house of parliament, where lawmakers are expected to complete debate before the summer recess.
