An assailant armed with two knives charged a police officer outside Israel’s diplomatic mission in the Serbian capital of Belgrade shortly after midnight on Wednesday and was shot dead.
According to the Higher Public Prosecution Office, the attacker opened the door of a guard house in front of the embassy and hurled one of his weapons at an officer identified only as D.S., wounding him in the left cheek.
D.S. drew his service weapon and fired several shots, killing the assailant. Prosecutors deemed his actions justified as self-defense. The investigation remains ongoing.
Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said the suspect was an unidentified minor who shouted “Allahu Akbar” as he rushed toward a Gendarmerie member.
Dacic noted that security services had been monitoring the suspect before the incident and that he was known to support the Islamic State terrorist organization. His Instagram profile displayed a black flag and symbols associated with the group.
Police raised the terrorism threat level to “Red,” the highest designation, and stepped up security at vulnerable locations, Dacic said, according to The Associated Press.
D.S. suffered minor injuries. After visiting him in the hospital, Dacic said he was in good condition and expected to be discharged later that day.
Israel’s Foreign Ministry reported no casualties among embassy staff, as the diplomatic mission was closed at the time.
The incident marked the second attack at the embassy in two years. In June 2024, an assailant wounded a Serbian police officer in the neck with a crossbow at the same location.
