American rapper Macklemore’s upcoming “Free Palestine” tour will raise money for several anti-Israel organizations, including the Palestine Youth Movement (PYM), whose British spokesperson previously justified Hamas’s October 7th kidnappings.
The tour’s London concert is scheduled for October 30.
The spokesperson, Jeanine Hourani, characterized the hostage-taking as “legitimate” and “effective,” according to The Jewish Chronicle (JC).
PYM publicly embraced the partnership on social media, writing, “We are incredibly grateful for our partnership with Macklemore on the Free Palestine Tour, alongside the many crucial organizations supporting our people back home.”
Macklemore, whose legal name is Benjamin Hammond Haggerty, announced the tour last month after being dropped from Ed Sheeran’s Loop tour amid controversy over his anti-Israel stance, including “genocide” and “apartheid” accusations. Live Nation is overseeing the London concert at Wembley Arena, which holds 12,500 people.
Promoting the concert on X, Macklemore criticized the influence of billionaires over which artists could perform and pledged that “all proceeds will benefit organizations supporting the Palestinian people and movement.”
A spokesperson for the Jewish Leadership Council (JLC) told the JC, “When the PYM describes the 7 October massacre as a ‘prison break,’ it risks legitimizing violence against Jews. At a time of grave violence and threats against Jewish communities, Live Nation must show how it will protect Jewish audiences and staff from antisemitic incitement and harassment.”
The spokesperson added, “PYM’s inclusion as a beneficiary of Macklemore’s concert raises serious questions about Live Nation’s vetting of the organizations it helps fund. We need a clear account of the checks undertaken, who will ultimately receive the proceeds and what safeguards will prevent the money being used to fund conduct that threatens the safety of Jews in this country.”
