One of Montreal’s most accomplished heart surgeons is leaving Canada for the United States, with sources close to him telling the Montreal Gazette that rising antisemitism was most likely the final straw behind his decision.
Dr. Emmanuel Moss, head of cardiac surgery at Jewish General Hospital and director of the cardiac surgery residency program at McGill University, is relocating to Atlanta with his family. Moss, 45, spent more than a decade helping build the hospital’s robotic cardiac surgery program and is considered one of Canada’s leading specialists in the field. He declined to comment publicly on his move.
According to the Montreal Gazette, sources close to Moss pointed to a growing number of antisemitic incidents in Montreal as a key factor in his decision. They cited attacks targeting Jews, vandalism of Jewish-owned businesses, synagogue firebombings, and a shooting at a yeshiva.
Among the incidents that reportedly disturbed Moss was a recent anti-Israel protest that featured a mock hanging of an effigy wearing a kippah.
“The healthcare system has had problems for years,” a source close to Moss told the Montreal Gazette. “What changed is the sense that the city has become a less safe and less familiar place for Jews.”
Dr. Louis Perrault, president of the Quebec Association of Cardiac Surgeons, warned that Quebec’s medical community would feel the loss. “He is at the peak of his career, with unique expertise in robotic surgery, and his departure is a major blow to the field,” Perrault said.
Moss’s departure follows that of Jewish scholar Dr. Gad Saad, who announced last month that he was leaving Concordia University for a position in the United States. Saad likewise cited hostility toward Jews and pro-Israel voices on Canadian campuses.
For many in Montreal’s Jewish community, the departures underscore a growing sense of unease.
