Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) Executive Director of European Affairs Shannon Seban issued the following statement on Thursday following the Dutch government’s announcement of a 700,000 euro funding boost for security at Jewish communal sites in the Netherlands:

“We welcome the decision of Justice Minister David van Weel to increase funding for the protection of Jewish institutions in the Netherlands by adding €700,000 to the existing €1.3 million budget, bringing the total to €2 million for 2026. This is an important and necessary recognition of the growing threats faced by Jewish communities.”

“However, this must only be a first step. Security funding alone cannot be the sole response to a climate in which antisemitic incidents are rising and Jewish citizens increasingly feel under threat.”

“The recent attacks targeting a synagogue in Rotterdam and a Jewish school in Amsterdam are a stark reminder that the danger is real and escalating.”

“Authorities must now go further by strengthening prevention, improving the monitoring and reporting of antisemitic acts, ensuring accountability for perpetrators, and guaranteeing full protection for Jewish schools, synagogues, and community institutions.”

“The security of Jewish communities should never depend on their own financial capacity. It is a core responsibility of the state.”

“The situation in the Netherlands is worrying and reflects a broader European trend that requires urgent and sustained action.”
