Milan’s Jewish community reported that three men assaulted a 60-year-old rabbi waiting for a bus near the city’s Jewish quarter on Tuesday.
The Jewish Community of Milan said the men recognized him as Jewish by his clothing and surrounded him, shouting curses and striking him with kicks and punches. They also removed his hat, threw it down, stepped on it and spat toward him. Community president Walker Meghnagi called it “violence unlike anything we have seen.”
The rabbi photographed the attackers as they fled and later filed a complaint at Milan police headquarters.
Police arrested a 20-year-old Tunisian man on suspicion of “religiously-motivated violence.” Two more suspects, ages 19 and 22, remain under investigation, one of Tunisian origin and the other of Moroccan origin. Investigators are also examining whether the men made explicit antisemitic remarks during the assault.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called the incident “cowardly and unacceptable” and expressed solidarity with the rabbi and Milan’s Jewish community.
“Antisemitic hatred is a scourge that we cannot and do not want to tolerate in any form, and we will continue to fight it with determination,” she added.
The Israeli Embassy in Rome also responded on X. “A rabbi being kicked and punched on a street in Milan is not an isolated incident: antisemitism in Italy and Europe shows no signs of stopping,” it said. “It is growing, becoming normalized and increasingly violent. Enough with the silence and the downplaying of its severity.”
