Hours before the start of Yom Kippur on Sunday, police in Manchester, England, arrested two men suspected of involvement in a terror plot targeting the Jewish community in and around the city.
The men, both in their thirties, were apprehended on Newton Street at 2:45 p.m. local time under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000.
The Metropolitan Police, which is leading the inquiry, transferred them to a London station for questioning. Under warrants of further detention, they can be held until September 27.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans, senior national coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing, described the case as the product of a lengthy, proactive operation. Officers did not believe it posed any ongoing threat to the public, she added.
“We are acutely aware this news will cause further concern to the Jewish community, as well as the wider public, especially given the significant High Holy Day period,” Evans said.
A spokesperson for the Community Security Trust (CST), which safeguards British Jewry, called the alleged plot “utterly chilling coming so close to the anniversary of the terrorist attack at Heaton Park Synagogue last year.”
