B’nai B’rith International Launches 2023 ‘None Shall Be Afraid’ Essay Contest for College-Age Students

B’nai B’rith International has launched the 2023 “None Shall Be Afraid” Essay Contest, with college students invited to address the prevalence of antisemitism on social media and how to combat it.

Winners will earn scholarship funds and have the opportunity for their essays to be published.

The contest is inspired by the August 1790 letter penned by first U.S. President George Washington to the congregants of the Touro Synagogue in Newport, Rhode Island, in which he quoted Micha 4:4, writing, “Everyone shall sit in safety under his own vine and fig tree and there shall be none to make him afraid.”

The contest is open to:

College students enrolled as of the Fall 2023 semester between the ages of 18-22.

Essay Questions:

Participants are asked in under 750 words to answer the following questions and share a personal experience:

1. What is antisemitism to you?

2. Share an antisemitic experience encountered on a social media platform.

3. How would you change the narrative of antisemitism on social media?

Awards:

1st place: $2,500 scholarship
2nd place: $1,000 scholarship
3rd place: $500 scholarship

The first-place winner will also have their essay printed in the Winter 2023 edition of B’nai B’rith Magazine and published on B’nai B’rith’s website and social media platforms.
