Germany Finally Condemns Iranian Regime’s ‘Spread of Anti-Semitism’

The Jerusalem Post is reporting that the Foreign Ministry of the Federal Republic of Germany has reversed its policy position that previously treated the Iranian regime’s calls to exterminate the Jewish state as solely “anti-Israel rhetoric,” and is now saying Iran’s rhetoric is anti-Semitic.

A Syrian government news outlet reported that the commander-in-chief of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Maj.-Gen. Hussein Salami, urged the “elimination” of the Jewish state. “The geography of the resistance will not forget the name and goals of the former secretary-general of the Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine, Ramadan Shalah, the high, bright and hope of liberating Jerusalem and removing the cancerous gland [Israel] from the region,” Salami said.

When the Post asked German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas about Salami’s statements, the Foreign Ministry replied that, “Such statements are absolutely unacceptable. We strongly condemn calling for the annihilation of Israel, legitimizing terrorism and spreading anti-Semitic content.”

Just last year, the government of German Chancellor Angela Merkel stated that Iran’s call to obliterate Israel is not an expression of anti-Semitism but simply anti-Israel. Under the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) working definition of anti-Semitism, denying the Jewish people the right to self determination is considered anti-Semitic. Germany is a full member of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance and has accepted the IHRA definition of anti-Semitism.
