Newly-elected Michigan Democratic Senator Abdul El-Sayed used his victory speech on Tuesday night to denounce American support for “genocide” and “apartheid,” in an apparent reference to Israel.
“To AIPAC, who spent $42 million against us, thank you for giving me the opportunity to beat you twice,” he said after defeating Republican opponent Mike Rogers to become the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate.
“They try to call you hateful if you believe that Palestinian kids should get to grow up in the land of their forefathers without being murdered by our tax dollars,” he added. “If you believe in equal rights to peace, dignity and self-determination, that’s not hate, it’s love.”
“Michiganders, we want our taxes spent here, for schools here and healthcare here and infrastructure here,” El-Sayed said. “We don’t want our money sent to do apartheid or genocide or war.”
Chants of “Free Palestine” rang through the crowd at El-Sayed’s Detroit campaign headquarters as he spoke.
