The CAM Antisemitism Research Center collects comprehensive antisemitism data from around the world on a constant basis, and publishes a regular feature on the top ten antisemitic incidents that shook Jewish communities globally during the preceding month.

The ten most shocking antisemitic incidents of January 2024 are as follows:

1. ICJ Interim Ruling Against Israel ‘Shames the Memory of Those Who Fought Against Genocide,’ CAM CEO Says

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague issued an interim ruling demanding Israel “take all measures within its its power” to prevent its forces from committing acts of genocide in the Gaza Strip, but did not order an immediate ceasefire in the ongoing war triggered by Hamas’ October 7th attack.

The case was initiated by South Africa in December.

In the interim ruling, the court voted by a 15-2 margin to back most of the provisional actions sought by South Africa, except for an immediate ceasefire. Israel had asked for the case to be rejected outright.

CAM CEO Sacha Roytman stated, “The ICJ’s interim ruling, coming a day before International Holocaust Remembrance Day, shames the memory of those who fought against genocide and the six million Jews on whose ashes the Genocide Convention was built.”

2. US City Council Gaza ‘Ceasefire’ Resolutions Fuel Antisemitism Surge Across Country

On January 31, a controversial decision echoed through the chambers of the Chicago City Council — a municipal call for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip amid Israel’s ongoing military response to the October 7th massacre perpetrated by Hamas.

While the resolution gained widespread media coverage following its narrow passage, Chicago is just one of almost 50 U.S. cities to have passed similar measures, with San Francisco, Oakland, Seattle, Minneapolis, Detroit, St. Louis, and Atlanta, among them.

While the Chicago City Council obviously lacks jurisdiction over the armed conflict in Gaza, the resolution’s impact lies in the realm of inspiration rather than direct influence. It doesn’t wield tangible implications, but its failure to demand the disarmament of the group responsible for the largest attack against Jews since the Holocaust undermines the chances for a peaceful regional future, and the resolution also promulgates antisemitism through demonization of the world’s only Jewish state.

3. ‘I Support Hamas, You F**king Jew’: US High School Basketball Game Brought to Halt by Violent Antisemitism

A barrage of antisemitic abuse hurled during a high school girls’ basketball game in Yonkers, New York, precipitated a walkout by the students of a Jewish school, who needed security guards to escort them to safety.

4. Teen Beaten Into Saying ‘Free Palestine’ Outside London Jewish School

A 17-year-old Jewish student at the Jewish Free School (JFS) in London was attacked outside the school grounds by two unknown teenagers, according to local media.

The teenagers had been having a heated exchange on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, when one of the unknown attackers punched the Jewish student.

Also in London in January, a group of three Israelis were beaten in Leicester Square, and a knife-wielding man was arrested after threatening passersby outside a kosher supermarket in the Golders Green neighborhood.

5. Jewish-Owned Toronto Deli Set Ablaze in Suspected Antisemitic Arson Attack

A Jewish-owned delicatessen in Toronto, International Delicatessen Foods, was set alight in what Canadian police were investigating as a hate crime.

Graffiti reading “Free Palestine” was painted on the doors of the establishment.

6. Jewish Doctor Violently Assaulted in Melbourne, Australia

A 76-year-old Jewish doctor was violently assaulted near his home in the Melbourne suburb of Brighton on New Year’s Day.

Victoria Police said the doctor went to check on an unconscious man who was lying on a nature strip in Bay Street.

The man allegedly became aggressive and assaulted the doctor when he offered assistance. The agitated man then followed the doctor home and smashed his front door, allegedly threatening another attack.

7. Berlin Police Open Probe After Israelis Speaking Hebrew Attacked at Local Eatery

German police were investigating after a 27-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man from Israel said they were attacked at a restaurant in northern Berlin after a patron overheard them chatting in Hebrew.

The pair came under verbal assault by an Arabic-speaking man who was sitting nearby and who later attacked them physically as well, hurling a bottle at the woman and punching the man in the face, police said in a statement.

8. UCF Student Arrested for Allegedly Threatening Jewish Students Amid Fallout of Gaza War

A Palestinian American student at the University of Central Florida is facing felony charges after he was accused of making death threats against three Jewish students on campus in the latest example of college campus turmoil over the brutal conflict in and around the Gaza Strip.

Across the country, educational leaders have been grappling with how to respond to an eruption of incidents that have ranged from verbal disagreements to physical violence since the war began in October. At UCF, Seif Asi, 21, is accused of saying he was “going to kill” three students in an emotional outburst.

In a message sent to students and staff, UCF Police Chief Carl Metzger called the incident a “direct antisemitic threat.”

9. Small Bomb Explodes at Greek Offices of Israeli Shipping Firm Zim

A makeshift explosive device went off outside the Greek offices of shipping company Zim, Israel’s main container shipping line, local police sources said.

Minor damage was caused by the blast in the port city of Piraeus, they added. No injuries were reported.

The unknown attackers threw leaflets reading “Free Palestine” at the scene of the attack.

10. Israel Says It Uncovered Hamas Terror Network Planning Attacks in Europe

Hamas runs a network of operatives in Europe commanded by terror leaders in Lebanon, Israel said, as its intelligence agencies released new details on the Gaza-based organization’s attempts to attack Israeli and Jewish targets abroad.

Hamas cells in Denmark, Germany and Holland were arrested in December on suspicion of plotting to attack Jewish targets in Europe.

According to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office, Israel’s Mossad and Shin Bet agencies in cooperation with foreign partners have been able to build a “comprehensive and in-depth” picture of Hamas’s efforts to carry out attacks in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

The PMO said Israel has uncovered “details on theaters of operation, terror targets, and on those involved in carrying out attacks — from Hamas commanders in Lebanon to the last of the attackers in the operational infrastructure.”
