Rocha Mayor Recalls Experience at Athens Summit Against Antisemitism in Remarks at Uruguayan Jewish Communal Gathering

At the opening event of this week of an annual gathering of the Comunidad Israelita de Punta del Este (CIPEMU), the Uruguayan Jewish communal organization that is a partner of the Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM), Mayor of Rocha Alejo Umpierrez was the guest of honor and spoke about his experience at the Mayors Summit Against Antisemitism in Athens, Greece, last year.

In his introductory remarks, CAM Director of Hispanic Outreach Shay Salamon thanked the governor and CIPEMU for their ongoing cooperation, and he emphasized the important role regional and municipal governments have to play to formulating effective policies to fight antisemitism and create a more just society.

Governor Alejo highlighted Uruguay’s close ties with Israel throughout history, including Uruguay’s vote in favor of the UN Partition Plan in 1947 that led to the establishment of the Jewish state the following year.

He also  underscored the responsibility of local governments to fight combat all forms of hatred and intolerance, rather than leaving this task only to international institutions and NGOs.

The event was attended by the president and general manager of the local community, a former deputy minister of security of Uruguay,  and numerous other community leaders and activists.
