A man boarded a bus in London’s Stamford Hill neighborhood on Thursday and threatened to kill the Jewish passengers on board.
“Shame Hitler didn’t kill you,” he said. “You should all go in the gas chambers.”
The assailant, 50-year-old James Agius of Hackney, claimed to be carrying a knife.
The driver stopped the vehicle and triggered an emergency alarm. Members of the public and North and East London Shomrim volunteers responded to the scene and detained Agius until police arrived.
A search yielded no weapon.

On Friday, the Crown Prosecution Service charged Agius with religiously-aggravated harassment and using threatening words.
The Metropolitan Police said the incident was being treated as an antisemitic hate crime. “The Met takes incidents of this nature incredibly seriously,” the force said.
The charge just over a week after an antisemitic stabbing attack in London’s Golders Green neighborhood in which two Jewish men were seriously wounded.
