At the “Festival for Palestine” in the Norwegian capital of Oslo on August 12, participants defended Hamas, trivialized the October 7th massacre, and called for “resistance” against Israel.
Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) Executive Director of European Affairs Shannon Seban documented the event firsthand and spoke directly with members of the crowd.

The October 7th attacks were “self-defense because Israel had killed a lot of Palestinians up to that date,” one man told Seban. “Most people were killed while they were trying to kill the Palestinians.”
“All good countries should go to war against Israel because they are invading and occupying Palestine,” he added. “There is not enough resistance in Europe and in Norway.”
“After 78 years of oppression, what would we do to have a resistance?” a woman asked Seban. “We should be very careful criticizing Hamas in our Western society.”
Another woman, queried by Seban on whether Israel had a right to exist, replied with a grimace, “I don’t have an answer.”
Earlier, the same woman said, “I’m not surprised that Hamas exists. I usually say that if Norway was still occupied by the Germans, we would have resistance here too, and I would join it.”
Loudspeakers at the festival blared “Death, death to the IDF” and a large “Stop the Genocide” banner — including an image of a watermelon, which has emerged as a common antisemitic symbol in the October 7th aftermath — was displayed.
A total of 2,962 antisemitic incidents were monitored across Europe by CAM’s Antisemitism Research Center (ARC) in 2025, nearly a 50% rise from 2024.
