Last weekend at the Coachella music festival in Indio, California, the Irish hip hop trio Kneecap displayed obscene anti-Israel slogans above the stage and led the crowd in chants of “Free Palestine.”
In response, CAM Public Affairs Officer Natalie Sanandaji, a survivor of the Nova music festival massacre, issued the following statement:
“As a survivor of the Nova music festival massacre on October 7, I am horrified, heartbroken, and disgusted by what transpired at Coachella over the weekend. Music festivals are supposed to be places where people come together to celebrate life, love, and connection through art and music.”
“To see a band project ‘F*** Israel’ over the stage is not only offensive, it’s triggering. On October 7, I had to run for my life from a music festival, a gathering that was meant to be about peace and joy. That day, 364 people were murdered by terrorists and dozens were taken back to Gaza as hostages. To use the stage of another festival to spew hatred, in any direction, is a betrayal of what these spaces are meant to represent.”
“I hope artists and audiences alike will choose empathy over division. Music festivals should never be platforms of hate.”
Sanandaji also tweeted, “Hamas attacked us on the dance floor on Oct 7 just for being Jewish. Now some artists, like Kneecap, make dance floors unsafe again — with chants that say our deaths were justified. If artists like Kneecap truly cared about humanity — instead of using their platform to be antisemitic bigots — their concerts would look more like the second photo.”
